Artist Spotlight - Angela Oster

So many things! Currently, it’s bats. I’m working on a giant bat sculpture for Waterloo Art’s DayGlo show. The structure of the wings is so beautiful to me. I’m also really inspired right now by the colors of the DayGlo pigments and how I can use pattern to get them to play with each other on both the interior and exterior of the wings.

It's usually an idea, a feeling, or an odd tidbit from my imagination. Something that I want to translate into a visual form that others can see and connect with. It’s like an invitation to my own little world.

What is something people might not know about you as an artist?

Every year I run this "Hark! the Horror!" Christmas contest on instagram that lets me explore the intersection of holiday cheer and dark humor. It's kind of like a beauty contest for who has the most unintentionally horrid Christmas decoration. It's become an annual tradition that people look forward to, and it helps me find others who have the same sense of humor as me!

It's rewarding when my work resonates with others. If it makes them smile, think, or see themselves in the piece somehow. That sense of shared understanding, of communicating something without needing words, is what makes being an artist so magical.

It's all because of the DayGlo show at Waterloo Arts. I saw a call for entry to the show, and that it included free paint. I was like, “Sign me up!” That was my introduction, and it turned into a revelation. Working with these pigments opened up a whole new dimension in my color vocabulary. There's an electric quality to DayGlo that you just can't replicate with traditional paints. They create an optical intensity that draws the eye and adds immediate energy—they literally excite the eye! Since then, it's become my not-so-secret weapon. I use a little bit in almost every piece I make.
