Artist Spotlight - Deanna Russell

06 Mar 2026

I am currently inspired by exploring new mediums and textures. Although I began with traditional acrylic painting on canvas, the incredible opportunities at Waterloo Arts have introduced me to artists and materials I never would have discovered on my own. This exposure has completely transformed my creative practice. Texture and three‑dimensional elements quickly became an essential part of how I express myself.

Most of my ideas are sparked by overwhelming emotions and unclear perspectives. During COVID, art became a deeply cathartic outlet for me — a way to process experiences I struggled to express in words. Over time, creating art has grown into one of my main tools for understanding and organizing my own emotions.

What is something people might not know about you as an artist?

One thing that most artists don’t know about me is that even though I may seem outwardly positive and approachable, inside I can be an anxiety‑ridden mess; art has truly become a form of therapy.

What has been the most rewarding part of your creative journey so far?

I would have to say one of the most rewarding parts of my creative journey has been connecting with so many like‑minded creatives. For most of my life, making art was a completely solitary process. Although I’ve always had strong support from friends and family, I never felt part of an artistic community until I found Waterloo Arts — and I have never felt more at home.

This experience has also introduced me to DayGlo products for the first time, and I am amazed by the visual impact these pigments bring to my work. The vibrancy and intensity they add elevate each piece in an exciting new direction. I’ve even started incorporating DayGlo paints into many of my pieces outside of the DayGlo ArtsFest. At this point, I’ll probably end up with an entire DayGlo section at the next art show or market I attend, based on how many pieces I’ve created!
