My subject matter is from the themes put forth through the gallery in the recent past years; otherwise, I usually would do something on a whim or something topical for the current year in the news. This year’s theme, PSYCHEDELIC, had me researching the meaning and incorporating my current issue of the term FRAGILE / HANDLE WITH CARE. I just completed a photo show on this study as well (please check out FRAGILE review by Olivia Began from CAN Journal blog).

What is something people might not know about you as an artist?
My name is Joanie Deveney, and I am known in Cleveland’s art and performance arena as Joan Of Art. I have been doing art since I was a kid back in the early 1960s—so for a good long time. I grew up in Euclid and graduated from Euclid High School in 1977. I had extensive art courses there, and after graduation, I chose to forgo any further art classes. I fortunately met up with musicians, poets, and other artists and continued my involvement in various genres of the arts.
In 1979, I landed an apprenticeship at a then-prominent stained glass studio, where I learned not only a trade but business relationships as well. I honed in on design and fabrication of many art glass windows that are still in homes and businesses in Northern Ohio and globally. I still continue with glass commissions to this day. I practice many mediums too.
As for getting involved with working with DayGlo, that came about in 2012 when a call for art came through a local gallery (The Doubting Thomas), where I did my first DayGlo painting, LIBERACE’S LAST WALTZ. I have since that time dedicated to entering the DayGlo show throughout all the years, until now, the current show at Waterloo Arts.
