Artist Spotlight - Laurel Herbold

06 Mar 2026

My work is almost always inspired by nature and the organic styles of the Art Nouveau and Psychedelic eras. Sometimes I will notice something odd or a minuscule detail in nature and be compelled to create an entire environment or scene around such observations.

People who have not visited my studio at W. 78th St. Studios may not realize the scope of work that I provide within my freelance business. I am often called upon for mural and sign painting and design. I also do a lot of commissioned custom art work for private and commercial spaces.

What is something people might not know about you as an artist?

Very few people know that I am often involved in historical restoration projects. I have a handful of residents, companies and designers who call upon me to handle architectural items and surfaces that are in need of cleaning and repair. In the event of reconstruction, new design elements will need to be resurfaced to match existing historical components. Bringing these architectural elements back to life is definitely one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. It’s so fun o peel back the layers of time to reveal how things were created so many years ago.

In 2024 I received the Outstanding Restoration of a Historical Feature Award from the Cleveland Restoration Society for the restoration of the Great Hall Chandelier at Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Ohio.

I became aware of DayGlo Corporation in 2014 when the annual Black Light exhibit was at the Doubting Thomas Gallery in Tremont, Ohio. I have been involved in the event ever since. When the venue moved to Waterloo Arts, I became friends with Amy Callahan and began helping out by designing some of the window displays throughout the years.

This year, 2026, I am honored to be the featured artist of the event. I have been busy creating the window display and involving myself in community workshops at the facility. Aside from the exhibit itself, my work will also be on display in their Cafe Gallery space throughout the exhibit. I have been creating work with DayGlo products for about 12 years and always look forward to the annual exhibit at Waterloo Arts.
