Artist Spotlight - Stas Kogan

I’m currently inspired by light as a transformative force — how ultraviolet light can completely shift perception and reveal hidden dimensions within structure and space. I’m exploring how geometry, tension, and glow interact to create immersive environments that feel both architectural and otherworldly.

Most often, it begins with structure — a geometric concept or spatial challenge. From there, color becomes emotional direction. Sometimes it’s a specific fluorescent tone that drives the entire composition. Other times, it’s the physical space itself that dictates how the threads will expand and interact.

What is something people might not know about you as an artist?

Many people see the finished glowing installation but don’t realize how physically demanding the process is. Each piece involves hundreds or thousands of precise thread connections, tension adjustments, and structural planning. It’s both meditative and intensely technical — almost like building a luminous architectural drawing in midair.

The most rewarding part has been watching people step into one of my installations and visibly shift — slowing down, looking closer, becoming immersed. Seeing someone experience light and geometry in a way they didn’t expect makes all the effort worthwhile.

I was introduced to DayGlo through Ingenuity Cleveland when I was accepted and we began discussing a project for Brite Winter. Around that time, I stopped by Waterloo Arts Gallery and saw firsthand how artists were working with fluorescent paint — their passion and patience in the process really stood out to me.
